Notable Permutation

I think I just may want to be a writer.

As you can tell I am not very certain about the subject. Since before I even started college I have wanted to be a web designer and I still love web design. But the best path for me to become one is no longer available to me. Whether because of my own ineptitude, laziness, or some strange twist of fate, I was unable to pass the required lower-division courses necessary to become an official Graphic Design major in my two-and-a-half years at Sacramento State. At this point it seems silly to keep trying.

So for the past couple months I have been waffling between alternate majors in my mind. Although Journalism has always been my fallback choice, I just came to a realization today that I actually hate the news and never want to become a journalist in the classic sense. I want to write for a magazine, write a script, design video games, and talk about sports. I do not and will not cover the news. I am beginning to think English is a major more suited for me. The vast amount of classes required for the major is indeed daunting, but with a focus in Creative Writing I think I will enjoy it far more than I would a class on copy writing, or the ethics of Journalism. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I also think a BA in English holds a little more weight and a lot more potential career diversity than a BA in Journalism.

So for now, in the imaginary registration office in my head, I am an English major. Wish me luck in my new path of study! Now I just need to start writing.

I Wish I Was a Writer

What I will not miss about the Sacramento State dormitories:

Living on the third floor. At this point, it is really hard to get angry over the fact that I live three stories above the ground, with only a cold hard stairwell allowing me access to this notorious “ground level”. I have traversed the staircase enough times, that I don’t even think about it as I climb. I know ever nook and cranny, how you can see the pool from the third floor window but not the second, how loose sandals sound as they slap the concrete on the way down, the familiar enormity of the white floor markings. But looking ahead, I welcome the miniscule ascent to my second floor room at home.

Having to cross the lawn, just to get breakfast. Although I usually had cereal in my room, it was more of a late night snack than an early morning one. So my first meal of the day almost always comes from the DC, which happens to be down three flights of stairs, across the lawn, and past a treacherous and often bitterly cold hallway. The length of distance between myself and fresh food is often enough to make you want to just give up. Breakfast might as well be perched atop Mount Everest.

The booming, cacophonous sound of the garbage truck at 10:30 in the morning, or sometimes earlier if they are feeling particularly spiteful. Who scheduled the pick-up at this ungodly hour? Why not just pay someone to punch us in the face every morning. We like to have the window open, to keep from suffocating in our sleep, so in the otherwise tranquil stillness of the morning, the behemoth garbage truck gruffly grabbing the dumpsters and slamming them back and forth feels like it is happening in my room. But even with the window closed it doesn’t get much quieter.

There are probably a lot more things I won’t miss about the dorms, and quite a lot of things I will miss, but these were the most fun to rant about.

Sim 2K4

So what has Sim been up to? Well, basketball mostly. Seriously, I am somehow involved in basketball every day of the week. I am taking a once a week basketball class for one credit this semester, I signed up for a five on five rec-league, and I have been playing pick-up games to fill in the gaps. Seing as how my TV only gets a few channels, I have it on ESPN 24/7, so I watch nothing but college and professional hoops along with Around the Horn and PTI. But I did hook up my roommates TV (I had to use my cable since he doesn’t have one) to watch the All-Star festivities on TNT this weekend. To top if all off, the only game I really play on my new Xbox is ESPN Basketball.

Class only just started a couple weeks ago for me, because my school saves up all those tiny, one-day holidays and compounds them into a massive winter break. While I’m still technically a graphic design major, I’m not taking any of those classes this semester. I’m getting a little GE out of the way as well as testing out the computer science major. I like it, but I think the math will keep me out of it in the long run.

So that about sums it up. Oh yeah, I also play a lot of Call of Duty. Check out my clan.

Back to School

On Tuesday I drove a couple hours to visit my aunt and uncle for one day and attend freshman orientation at Sacramento State the next two. I learned all about my major: Graphic Design, and registered for my first semester of classes. It was all pretty exciting and I look forward to August 28th, which is when I move into the dorms. In the meantime, I have Necrowombicon to look forward to, which is only 15 days away!
